Division - Racism and Sexism in Advertising

Think of a TV commercial that you object to because it is offensive or annoying in some way.  Write about why it bothers you so much.

  1. For me, I don't have a particular commercial that I can think of at the top of my head that annoys me but overall, I think that any commercial that name drops another company or store is just bad because they are using the method of putting other people down to promote themselves. They cannot show the people watching TV how good they are by showing us what they do well, but instead, they show us what other companies are not good at, what they lack in/of.

  2. The commercials that are offensive and annoying at the same time are the trade school commercials. For example, Heald College. They always tend to target the same people and use the same people for example. It is always a latin or african american, who had a child young or who doesn't do anything. There's that latina who says she had a child young and she still did it. These offends me because they are generalizing. Not all latinas had a child young. I forgot what school, but they use an african american talking to the camera saying to stop being lazy and to "make that phone call". They are implying that african americans males at home are lazy. These are so annoying because when I'm watching my favorite show Maury they keep coming up to target those "lazy" people.

  3. I agree with both Cindy and Amy on this one because advertisement should only focus on promoting ones cause not putting other people down or focuses on certain groups of people. It should mainly focus on advertising the good in their product or education.

A commercial that I find pretty offensive are mostly the beer commercials. I am tired of seeing the "plastic" girls holding beers in their hand and seducing men. This does not advertise the beer but makes us girls look like products. Same with weight loss products. They keep showing the same females loosing all that just by devouring a pill. Females come in all shapes and sizes and they are beautiful just the way they are. I am tired of seeing a husband tell his wife that she looks prettier now or he is glad she lost all that weight. And the wife saying, my husband will love me more now. What the heck? Your looks should not matter; love doesn't care what you look like. It is ridiculous and they are bringing down girls of all ages. I understand that being overweight is unhealthy but doctors are here to protect you and help you lower that excess weight.

  4. I completely agree with Amy that the trade school commercials are completely offensive. They always feature an african-american or Hispnic person talking about how they were "screw ups" working in a low wage job until they "called the number on the screen." Now they have fantastic lives because they attended Heald or whatever trade school. I have noticed that they always play these commercials during shows whose main demographic are hispanic and black 20 something year olds.

As offensive as it is though I can't really blame the advertisment agencies because they use offensive advetising because it works. Whether its the beer commercial with the scantily dressed blond bombshell or the lady that was five hundred pounds that is now barely a hundred pounds because of "working out only five minutes a day for a month" ,It sells the product that they trying to sell.

I mean a lot of commercials bother me ,but it doesn't really matter if I'm bothered by it because those commercials will still be aired as long as people buy those products. Until enough people are offended by a particular commercial enough to boycott that companies procucts offensive commercials will never stop being aired.

  5. Cindy's point on how advertizers spend more time putting down other's products rather than describing their own, is definately an advertizing trend that irritates me. In particular I've found that Medicine advertizements irritate me, because they name syptoms which anyone could have and make you wonder if YOU need medicine. They make people think of every little problem as a desease- "And WE have the Solution!!!" Doctors, not advertizment actors, are meant for prescribing drugs.

  6. I think the most recent annoying one is for those new Rebok shoes for women. I mean the first one where it is just the camera man continuously zooming on the girl's butt is just ridiculous. Basically they are saying "hey do you want someone's eyes glued to your butt? You do! Great now buy our shoes." Seriously, I would rather not have to see that type of stuff.

  7. As I began thinking about offensive commercials none immediately came to mind so I decided to look up “offensive commercials.” The first result was Padma Lakshmi’s new commercial for Carl’s Jr. In the advertisement Lakshmi a culinary expert who is also the host of “Bravo’s Top Chef” went as far as showing her cleavage and thighs to make this advertisement. She is portrayed scurrilously. This advertisement is clearly aimed toward men.

I hate advertisements in which women are degraded and I am deeply offended by them. What angers me more is that women would actually be so thick headed to do such commercials. Like this one and the ones listed above by Lorita. UGGGHH!

  8. I saw the commercial that Dalvinder is talking about and its true because the ad focuses on men. And instead of the ad being about Carls Jr. its all about her cleavage and thighs which is suppose to seduce men in a way.
